Annotation | — | The Lessing Prize of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg was established in 1929 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (January 22, 1729) and first awarded in 1930. Since 1977, the prize has been awarded every four years.
There is usually one main prize winner, who receives 10,000 euros as prize money, and one or more scholarship holders, who can receive up to 5,000 euros. The main prize winners, who should belong to the German cultural circle, are poets, writers or scholars whose works and activities deserve distinction under the high standards set by the award's namesake. The scholarship holders ("Stipendiaten" - S) should be residents of Hamburg or be related to Hamburg or its intellectual-artistic life in a clear way.
